At Peter Brotherhood we are committed to the UK objective of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
We are already part of the Green Industrial Revolution in the UK and around the world.
Our solutions for Net Zero Emissions will ensure we play an increasingly important role by addressing our own environmental impact and also enabling our customers to do the same.
We will achieve this through continuing to evolve and develop new technologies in our rotating equipment products and services to provide the green energy solutions required to achieve Net Zero Emissions.
OUR OWN ACTIONS TO ACHIEVE NET ZERO
We have held the ISO14001 Environmental Management Standard accreditation since 1999. This is a key part of our drive for continual improvement through good management systems and process.
Our commitment to the continued training and development for our colleagues promotes a culture of environmental responsibility.
Since 2017 we have sent zero waste to landfill. All our waste is separated on-site prior to being sent for either recycling or incineration.
We set challenging environmental targets that include the reduction of the waste we send for incineration.
Our own 227kW CHP unit provides efficient power, heating and cooling for our factory and offices.
We have implemented energy efficient LED lighting within our factory, office and external areas.
Energy consumption was reduced by fitting a variable speed drive to our factory compressed air system.
Reducing road vehicle emissions is promoted through car sharing and also our cycle-to-work scheme. We plan to convert our company owned vehicles from diesel to hybrid in the near term and to fully electric ahead before the UK target of 2030.
We are offsetting 200% of all carbon generated from our field engineer’s flights.
In the coming years we will install solar panels to provide electrical power and introduce electric vehicle charging for our employees and visitors.
REDUCING EMISSIONS WITH EXISTING PRODUCTS
Energy from Waste (EfW) – Peter Brotherhood Steam Turbines are ideally suited to a wide variety of EfW applications with excellent efficiency across variable steam conditions. We use frame sizes that are perfectly matched to give the optimum power output from the volume of waste.
Biomass – Our Steam Turbines and CHP units operate on Biomass applications. We have supplied equipment into the biomass sector for well over 50 years. Peter Brotherhood’s experience is second to none, having supported customers throughout the UK and around the globe.
Waste Heat Recovery – Peter Brotherhood Steam Turbines are widely used for waste heat recovery. They significantly improve power plant efficiency by utilising the waste heat and reducing carbon footprint. We have supplied these for a variety of applications ranging from shipping container vessels to land based power plants.
Services – A vital aspect of owning rotating machinery is the ability to keep it operating efficiently with high availability. We are experts at supporting our customers to do this through our 5D Customer Support Model.
FUTURE NET ZERO SOLUTIONS
Adding battery technology to CHP units will allow our customers to operate more efficiently with smaller engines that reduce emissions. This technology allows peak power load demands to be picked up by the battery rather than sizing a unit based upon the peak load demand.
Our steam turbines are suitable for use in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) applications as part of the UK’s SMR programme. This programme provides factory built modular solutions that drive down the cost of nuclear energy, whilst maintaining the high levels of assurance required. Our pedigree is in our extensive experience supplying to highly regulated sectors such as Nuclear, Marine, Defence and Offshore.
We are evolving our CHP technology and services for increased and more efficient utilisation of bio-gas and synthetic gas.
Hydrogen CHP will see the development of hydrogen engine technology and in turn we will be introducing hydrogen engines into our CHP units. By using our existing skills we will support these for our customers as we have done with traditional CHP over the past 25 years.
Hydrogen production through electrolysis requires significant levels of green electrical power. Our Steam Turbine solutions will support distributed hydrogen production systems.
We continue to review the latest technologies that will to support Net Zero Emissions. This includes rotating equipment solutions that support carbon capture, energy storage, hydro-power stations and renewable energy systems. Examples of this being the use of compressors and gas expanders in compressed air energy storage (CAES).
Did you know? In 1998 we manufactured the first commercial 1MW wind turbine for RES. This was an important milestone in the use of land based wind turbines in the UK and a step on the journey to Net Zero Emissions.
